What the SMS Plus GX core is

SMS Plus is an open-source Sega Master System and Game Gear emulator written by Charles MacDonald. SMS Plus GX is an enhanced version that the documentation describes as including improved accuracy and bug fixes affecting most games.

Documented feature support

The documentation's feature table lists which capabilities the core supports. Supported features are the day-to-day ones: Restart, Screenshots, Saves, States, Rewind, Core Options, Memory Monitoring (achievements), RetroArch Cheats, Controls, Remapping and Softpatching. Everything else in the table is marked unsupported, including Netplay, Native Cheats, Multi-Mouse, Rumble, Sensors, Camera, Location, Subsystem, Disk Control, Username, Language, Crop Overscan and LEDs.

Controls, remapping and saves

Controls and Remapping are listed as supported, alongside Saves, Save States and Rewind. Softpatching is also marked supported. Native Cheats are not supported, but RetroArch Cheats are, so cheat codes should be handled through the frontend's cheat system rather than the core.

Limitations to keep in mind

Netplay is listed as unsupported, so do not expect online networked play through the core's feature table. Rumble, Sensors, Camera, Location and Multi-Mouse support are also marked unsupported, which matters if you plan to use motion, light-gun or other specialized input hardware.
