The IBM Music Feature Card (IMFC) was released by IBM in 1987 as a MIDI-capable sound card for the IBM PC and compatible machines. It combined a Yamaha FB-01 FM synthesiser module with an MPU-401 compatible MIDI interface. DOSBox Staging 0.83 can emulate the card, but very few games support it; the documentation positions it primarily for musicians and MIDI enthusiasts rather than general gamers. This guide summarises the official configuration steps for DOSBox Staging 0.83, including the settings, the expected result and recovery notes.
Prerequisites
- - DOSBox Staging 0.83 installed.
- - Access to the DOSBox Staging configuration file, where the [imfc] section is edited.
- - A game or MIDI application that supports the IBM Music Feature Card, if you intend to use it for software playback.
- - Awareness that only a small set of games support the card, so software support should be confirmed before troubleshooting sound output.
Configure the [imfc] section
IBM Music Feature Card settings are configured in the [imfc] section of the DOSBox Staging configuration. The documented options enable the card, allow selecting a base address and set an IRQ number. The base address default is 2A20, with 2A30 as the alternative. The IRQ default is 3, with 2, 4, 5, 6 and 7 also documented as possible values.
| Setting | Documented values | Notes | |---|---|---| | imfc | on (to enable) | Enables the IBM Music Feature Card emulation. | | Base address | 2A20 (default), 2A30 | I/O base address for the card. | | IRQ | 2, 3 (default), 4, 5, 6, 7 | Interrupt request line. | Source: official DOSBox Staging 0.83 manual for the IBM Music Feature Card.
[imfc]
imfc = on
base = 2A20
irq = 3Expected result and mixer routing
When enabled, the IBM Music Feature Card outputs to the IMFC mixer channel. Volume and mixing for the card are therefore handled through that channel rather than a separate output path, so check the IMFC channel's level and mute state when verifying sound output.
Game support context
Very few games support the IBM Music Feature Card. The documentation identifies Sierra as essentially the only game company to have supported it, along with a handful of Game Arts/Falcom ports. It was primarily aimed at musicians and MIDI enthusiasts rather than gamers.

Recovery and troubleshooting notes
- - If no sound is heard, verify that imfc is set to on and that the IMFC mixer channel is not muted or turned down.
- - If the configured base address or IRQ conflicts with another emulated device, try the alternative documented values: base address 2A30 or a different IRQ from the documented list.
- - Return to the default base address 2A20 and default IRQ 3 if changes do not resolve an issue.
- - If a game still produces no card audio, remember that only a small number of titles support the IBM Music Feature Card; consult the documented game list before assuming a configuration fault.
