DOSBox Staging 0.83 can emulate the Roland Sound Canvas line of MIDI modules. This guide summarizes the official documentation for the feature: how the emulation is implemented, what to set in the configuration, which SC-55 model revision to choose, and which constraints apply to ROM images and licensing. It is a summary of the official documentation and has not been tested hands-on.
What the Roland Sound Canvas is
The Roland Sound Canvas SC-55, released in 1991, was a MIDI sound module that supported General MIDI (GM) and Roland's GS extension to GM, and it became the de facto standard for DOS game music.
How DOSBox Staging emulates the SC-55
DOSBox Staging emulates the SC-55 through the Nuked SC55 CLAP audio plugin, which is bundled with the release packages. According to the documentation, this provides sample-accurate playback of the actual SC-55 sound engine.
Enabling Sound Canvas in the configuration
The documented setting selects Sound Canvas as the MIDI device in a configuration file:
[midi]
mididevice = soundcanvasSound Canvas audio is routed to the SOUNDCANVAS mixer channel, so level adjustments are made through the usual mixer channel list for that channel.
Choosing an SC-55 model revision
The documentation describes several firmware revisions and explains which to pick. The SC-55 v1.21 is described as the best overall choice for DOS gaming: it has Capital Tone Fallback (CTF) and fixes most issues present in earlier revisions, and the soundcanvas_model = auto setting prefers v1.21 when its ROM is available.
Capital Tone Fallback is a Roland GS feature that ensures correct instrument playback when a game requests a GS variation tone the module does not have. Without it, the module may play silence or the wrong instrument. Many DOS games rely on CTF for correct audio, especially for percussion and instrument variations.
Trade-offs of the SC-55mk2
The SC-55mk2 offers higher polyphony, but its voice-allocation rules differ from those of the original module, so some games composed for the original SC-55 can cut notes off earlier on the mk2. Very few games make meaningful use of the extra polyphony, and the differences are usually subtle. Emulating the mk2 is also more CPU-intensive than emulating the original SC-55 revision, so the documentation describes SC-55 v1.21 as the generally better choice.
ROM images and licensing terms
The Roland Sound Canvas ROM images are copyrighted by Roland Corporation and therefore cannot be bundled with DOSBox. The feature is stated to be intended only for personal use, such as retro gaming or hobby music writing, and for research purposes.

| Revision | Documented characteristics |
|---|---|
| SC-55 v1.21 | Described as the best overall choice for DOS gaming; has Capital Tone Fallback (CTF); addresses most issues in earlier revisions; preferred by soundcanvas_model = auto when its ROM is available |
| SC-55 v2.00 | Lacks CTF; documentation advises avoiding it for games that rely on CTF |
| SC-55mk2 | Higher polyphony but different voice-allocation rules that can cut notes off earlier; more CPU-intensive to emulate; lacks CTF |
