What FreeChaF is
FreeChaF is a lightweight libretro core that emulates the Fairchild Channel F, also known as the Video Entertainment System. It was written specifically for use with low-power devices, such as a Raspberry Pi.
The core also supports loading a "no cart" ROM to play the system's built-in games, controller swapping and dual-analog controls. It is authored by David Richardson and released under GPLv3, with the libretro library name "FreeChaF".
Prerequisites
- - RetroArch with libretro core support (FreeChaF is distributed as a libretro core named "FreeChaF").
- - The BIOS images sl31253 and sl31254. The sl90025 BIOS will supersede the sl31253 version if found.
- - A Channel F ROM using one of the supported extensions: .bin, .rom or .chf.
Setup steps summarized from the documentation
The official page documents the core's purpose, BIOS requirements, supported file extensions and core options, but it does not publish a numbered installation walkthrough. The following steps reflect that documented information and are organized here for reference; exact menu labels in your RetroArch build may vary.
- 1. Obtain the FreeChaF core through your usual libretro core installation method in RetroArch, or from the core's repository.
- 2. Place the required BIOS images (sl31253 and sl31254) where your RetroArch core expects BIOS files. If an sl90025 BIOS is present, it supersedes sl31253.
- 3. Prepare your Channel F content as a .bin, .rom or .chf file.
- 4. Load the content with the FreeChaF core selected. To play the built-in games, use a "no cart" ROM as described in the documentation.
- 5. Adjust the core option for screen clearing if needed (see below).
Core option
The documentation lists one core option: "Clear screen in single frame" (option key freechaf_fast_scrclr), with values disabled or enabled. The documented default is disabled.
Controller features
According to the documentation, FreeChaF supports controller swapping and dual-analog controls. No further configuration details for these features are given in the source.
If something does not work
The documentation does not describe troubleshooting outcomes. For issues, the official project points to its issue tracker. Do not assume that the steps above will resolve a specific problem without checking that tracker or the project repository.
