The RPCS3 core brings the RPCS3 PlayStation 3 emulator to RetroArch as a libretro port. According to the official libretro documentation, it runs the PS3's Cell processor using RPCS3's LLVM recompilers and renders through Vulkan or OpenGL. The emulator itself is upstream RPCS3; the core is the libretro wrapper around it.
RetroArch feature support at a glance
The documentation includes a support table showing which RetroArch frontend features the RPCS3 core handles. The supported and unsupported entries are summarized below.
Supported features
- The documentation marks the following as supported: Restart, Screenshots, Core Options, Native Cheats, Controls, Remapping and Rumble.
Unsupported features
- The documentation marks Sensors, Camera, Location, Subsystem, Softpatching and Disk Control as unsupported. It also lists Saves, States, Rewind, Netplay, Memory Monitoring, RetroArch Cheats, Multi-Mouse, Username, Language, Crop Overscan and LEDs as unsupported.
Rendering backends
The core renders with Vulkan or OpenGL, per the documentation. That is the full extent of the graphics detail the source provides; it does not spell out per-backend driver requirements or performance comparisons here.
Practical implications for your setup
Because the core does not support RetroArch save states, rewind or netplay, any saving behavior has to come from the emulator side rather than the frontend. Native cheats are supported, while RetroArch's own cheat engine and memory monitoring are not. Disk Control is likewise unsupported, so the frontend disc-swap workflow is not listed as available for this core.
Controls and remapping are both supported, so input mapping can be configured through RetroArch. Rumble is supported, while sensors, camera and multi-mouse are not.
